TITLE: The Curse
FANDOM: Watchmen
PAIRING: Dan/Rorschach/Laurie
SUMMARY: Rorschach's freaking out again. Written for kinkmeme.

"Rorschach?" Dan says.

It's safer to call him Rorschach when he's upset. But there's no answer, and Dan presses his ear against the closet door. He can hear labored breathing. Oh god, he's hyperventilating in there.

"Rorschach," he tries again. "It's ok, man. It's just us here. Dan and Laurie, you trust us. It's just us."

"This is completely ridiculous," Laurie says, standing behind him in the hallway. She's not speaking quietly either. Dan shoots her what he hopes is a quelling look.

"And UNNECESSARY," she adds, addressing the closet door.

"Laurie!"

"Dan, you're coddling him. If your boyfriend still can't deal with the fact that one of the two people who's been sucking his cock for the last three months is a WOMAN--"

"Laurie!"

She leans in close to the closet door. "Walter, this is stupid. Come out of there."

"Stop it," Dan says. "And why were you talking about that around him anyway?"

"I just said I was crampy. And that I needed to stock up on tampons. What, I can't talk about my dirty nasty lady parts? It's not as if he hasn't had his DICK IN THEM," she adds to the door.

Dan buries his face in his hands.

Laurie is still talking to the closet. "Walter, you come out of there RIGHT NOW!"

Disaster. This is a disaster.

"Walter, menstruation is a NATURAL and HEALTHY part of HUMAN BIOLOGY."

From the closet, there is a muffled "Filthy."

"Well I don't like it any more than you do, champ, but if I can put up with it you SURE AS HELL CAN TOO."

No answer.

"FINE, STAY IN THERE FOR THE NEXT FIVE DAYS," she yells, and stalks off.

Dan sits in front of the closet for a while, but he can't think of anything to say. Eventually he wanders off to find Laurie.

She's in the kitchen, chopping vegetables in a way that reminds him that she can put a man down with her bare hands. Dan gets a beer from the fridge and sits down heavily at the kitchen table, and waits.

"I don't know, Dan," she says, finally. Chop, chop chop. "I just don't know. I haven't seen him like that in months."

"Look, he's Walter," Dan says. "He's always going to be a little --"

"Fucked up in the head, I know." Chop, chop. Then the chopping sound stops, and she says, "Sometimes I wish I could find whoever did this to him and rip their throat out."

He looks up, and Laurie is actually crying, rubbing angrily at her eyes and nose with the back of her hand. Dan gets up and goes to her, pulling her in against his shoulder. "Hey," he says. "I know. I love him too."

"I know you do," she says, muffled against his neck. She sniffs and pulls away. "Damnit."

"He'll come out when he smells food," Dan suggests, and manages to make her smile.

But Walter doesn't come out for dinner, or while they watch the news, and finally he and Laurie climb into bed by themselves. Dan curls around her and strokes her hair. They don't have to talk about it.

Dan has fallen into a light sleep when pressure on the bed wakes him. Walter is climbing in between them, fitting himself into the space between their bodies.

Laurie stirs. "Walter?"

"...Sorry, Laurel."

"It's okay."

"Shouldn't have --"

"Shhh. We'll talk about it in the morning."

"Hurm."

Dan feels Walter settle in, and he shifts a little so that he's pressed tighter against Walter's ribs and knees. Laurie's hand brushes his neck; she's thrown her arm across Walter's thin shoulders.

Dan reaches up and squeezes her hand. Laurie squeezes back.

They sleep.
